Discussion 1: Choosing a Decision Approach

The first decision I have recently made is relocating to another city. I used the intuitive, emotional approach. From the approach, I considered my guts about relocating. The advantage of this approach is it does not leave one with regrets. The disadvantage is that one can make an irrational decision. The second decision is starting a small business, and I used a rational, analytical approach. The advantage is one can identify the impacts of a decision before deciding. The disadvantage is it is time-consuming. For the two decisions, I would recommend an analytical style of decision making.

One of the decisions other people have made is choosing a particular career. The approach used is rational analytical. The advantage is the person selected the most marketable course. The disadvantage is he did not consider his passion; he does not like what he does. The second decision is getting married. The approach used is intuition emotional. The advantage is that the person got married to the person she felt was right. The disadvantage is she did not include behavioral factors in her decision, so the partner is promiscuous. For the two decisions, I would recommend a behavioral style of making decisions.

Discussion 2: Sources of Organizational Power

The first type is expert power. It is the power that an employee has because of their expertise in specific areas (Bhasin, 2019)). Such employees are given responsibilities to manage others because of the knowledge they possess. The second type is coercive power. A manager may threaten employees, for instance, by cutting their salaries if they do not complete a particular task. In that case, the manager is using coercive power. It is used to enforce strict deadlines and measures in the workplace.

The third power is referent power. It results from the personality of a person. Some employees may get along with many people in the workplace and earn a certain degree of respect that may earn them the power to manage other employees. The last type is reward power. When employees are rewarded because of their performance, they earn some reward power to influence other employees to raise their standards of performance. In such a case, it is used as a motivating factor.
