African Americans

African Americans draw cultural traditions from the native ethnic groups of West Africa and central Africa culture together with the European culture. African American slavery impacted the cultural identity of African Americans as they were restricted to practice their culture (Brown, 2013). However, there are still many values and beliefs that remained in the African American culture. The African American identity was derived during slavery to form a dynamic culture. Ceremonies and rituals were a significant part of African American culture. The African American culture has today influenced the American culture in different ways.

Current Demographic Information

            Statistics done by Pew Research Center analyzed the demographic characteristics of African American population in 2019. The number of African Americans in the U.S. is approximately 46.8 million as per 2019 records (Tamir, 2021). The statistics show that the population of African Americans is growing and becoming more diverse. The population of African Americans who claim to have the ethnic and racial identity to be African American in consensus has declined (Tamir, 2021).  The age bracket of African Americans has also changed since 2000. African Americans fall under the age group of young people in the United States.            

African Americans are continuously occupying a larger population in the United States. Marginalization among African Americans is slowly but steadily coming to an end. African Americans are developing a place for themselves in the United States despite the challenges they face. Understanding and appreciating the African American culture has a significant impact on the American culture as the African American is dynamic and thus changes proficiently.
