Situate Yourself

In the realm of history, understanding oneself creates a chain of progression to future generations. One can understand their role in the evolution process and the functions of society that they are bound to engage for sustainable impacts (Mansell & Fletcher, 2003). Growing up in Canada, I believe my great parents originated from the European continent and settled in the country. Due to the multi-dynamism of the Canadian culture, we often find out true originality diluted. In this sense, I believe that my family is mixed with people of other backgrounds. On the verge of searching for my identity, my parents and my background can trace does not provide much evidence. In that regard, I have let go over time and came to appreciate the diversity of the human species. This means that Canada still belongs to the world, and in the world is where I belong. This connection to the world has revealed extreme realities to me. However, I will discuss them later. In the meantime, I would like to explore my character in the realm of society.

According to the generations categories, I am a millennial, which presents an extensive myriad of challenges and opportunities. I grew into the possibilities of technology and the verge of internet connections. Reflecting, it is hard to imagine that my great-grandparents did not have access to these possibilities. This has become my way of doing things and my reality. In this regard, my relation with people has changed over time, including how we interact as a family, colleagues, and friends. One character that I had developed is a lack of patience. In an instant gratification world, technology has pushed every young person to locate themselves at the center of the world, forgetting that they are just a speck of dust compared to the vast world population. In that regard, I always got angry when things did not go my way, and were worry about the challenges that sometimes life presents.

The first encounter with challenges about life was in high school, where I experienced numerous lessons. Being a quiet person in school gave other people the right to think that one is an introvert and a coward for that matter. In that regard, instances of bullying were very high (David Gregory et al., 2008). However, in a way, I could scare the bullies considering they did not understand my thoughts nor my temperaments. Either way, I could not stand other kids being harassed for sins they did not commit. Learning in a mixed-race school, there were students from most ethnicities, including Asians and Latino people. Most of the bullies were Canadian. I could not understand the reason for their behavior despite feeling agitated with their actions. Perhaps the world is not a fair place, I thought. After school, I would narrate these scenarios to my parents, and they could comfort me and advised me to stay away from those people.

Growing up in a middle-class family, I would see my parents struggle to pay for the mortgage, household expenses, vacations, and school fees. Despite the challenges they faced, they always prioritized, giving us quality education and having a healthy lifestyle. This was the first life experience of an instance where a person dedicates their time and money in making another human being happy and better. Additionally, the love was immense, and I would not wait to give my children the same. I believe that love is the foundation of all great things in the world. When there is an ignition of passion, there is the power to achieve anything that a human being can dream. At least this is my view of the world. Therefore, I would want to treat whatever I am doing with love to extract maximum results.

Nevertheless, there were still gaps in the journey to adulthood. Most of my peers in high school were from wealthy families where they lived in penthouses and others in beautiful mansions. Some would be dropped every morning by an expensive car belonging to their family. In our family, the car was the common one, and there was no much credit. This feeling of not feeling enough went on until the finish of high school. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise; I managed to work hard and outperform most of my peers. The lack of luxuries they enjoyed gave me time to concentrate on my dreams and focus on the immediate goals. In this process, I developed a character of contribution to others’ success. With my parents, we would visit care homes where the elderly were taken care of. We would go to support them in flexing their muscles and relaxing their joints. This would give me so much satisfaction that I forgot about the cars and lovely watches that my friends enjoyed. In that regard, I developed a passion for helping people. Since then, I have understood the impact of giving and the rewards that come with it.

One of the realities that I have appreciated over time is the behavior of energy. The wisdom in understanding the power energy helps me to get the most out of relationships and interactions. I know that the results that one gets in return are as a result of the work that one puts in. This means that working hard pays off in the long-run. Also, when one puts out positive energy, the same magnitude of fulfillment reflects them. In that regard, radiating positive energy and inspiring motivation on people is an effective way to maintain one’s health and happy life in general (DiCenso et al., 2010). Therefore, this way of looking at life will help me even further to realize my goals and to help more other people ignite their emotions. In that regard, I can be a source of inspiration and advice to orient patients to better their health.

From the above experiences and character development, nursing became my first choice when choosing my career. Luckily, my parents had noticed my passion and would lender me into care homes and children’s homes to help them in their daily lives. In that regard, this dream and passion was ignited further and would ensure more of my time was devoted to helping people. Apart from helping people, I developed different habits that would help me have more knowledge. I created a culture of reading. Reading for me meant generation and gaining of knowledge that would help me relate with people better, and to get the most from interacting with them. Perhaps this motivation is that led me into the nursing practice.

In Canada, nursing is offered in numerous aspects of the medical fraternity. They include adult medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, maternal-child, geriatric, and psychiatric nursing. In this regard, the nursing spectrum is extensive and requires individuals to undergo different certifications before they can practice (Stanhope, et al., 2014). The National Council of State Nursing Boards ensures that standardized examinations are administered to accredit nurses from different nursing programs.

Nurses hold a unique place in the Canadian health care system. They account for the largest group of frontline healthcare workers. Most nurses work independently with other healthcare professionals to promote health among individuals, communities, and families (Lukewich et al., 2018). They are responsible for most health counseling and advice. In that regard, they become critical links in maintaining health care quality and standards. Nurses can work as home caregivers or in nursing homes where they provide care services to a wide range of people apart from hospitalized patients.

My intention in the nursing practice is to elaborate healthcare complexities to help individuals overcome health tribulations. About the experiences I have had in my life, I presume that my purpose is to assist people in getting better. Additionally, I am a lover of family and the belonging that comes with it. Through the volunteer engagements that I have experienced throughout my life, helping people and their families overcome challenges is the best way to become of service to others. Therefore, I am looking forward to a satisfying practice that will open doors for me to meet people, demonstrate empathy, and bring a change in society.
