Activity Eight

Throughout the course of history, humans have wanted to soar above the earth like birds. Thousands of years ago, the Greeks told the story of Daedalus, who made wings for himself and his son Icarus out of feathers and wax. In the 15^th century, Leonardo da Vinci designed an invention called the Ornithopter. Over the next few hundred years, people invented hot air balloons and gliders. There were efforts to build a powerful airplane, although the efforts were not successful until the beginning of the 20^th century. In 1903, Wilbur and Orville Write built and flew a motorized airplane for the first time for 120 feet (37 meters). The invention has changed our lives dramatically. Once it took months or even years to cross the ocean, travelers now make the trip in hours. People can see other countries, eat new foods, and learn about other cultures because of the invention. However, the ability to fly anywhere anytime means that the invention pollutes more parts of the world.

Activity Nine

One invention that has changed modern life is the cell phone. Before this invention, it took days or even months to send a message across several miles. Some people had become professional messengers (mailmen), collecting and distributing messages across the country. However, cell phones have replaced mail professionals by allowing people to send and receive messages instantly. The invention has enabled people to talk and see each other across great distances through video and voice features. However, social scientists have found that cellphones have increasingly made people antisocial.
